MIAMI – A 21-year-old man’s sister is identifying him as the person shot and wounded by a Miami police officer near Bayfront Park Sunday.
A Miami police officer said he was forced to fire at Menelek Clarke after Clarke’s vehicle made contact with him while he was directing traffic on Biscayne Boulevard during the Best of the Best concert.
Sherylann Clarke said she was in the car with her brother at the time and that they were looking for a parking spot.
“We were all stopped. We were in the middle and he told everyone else to go with his hands, signaling that we can go,” she said. “And then he stood in front of my brother’s car and shot him. It wasn’t intentional to hit him. No, the man moved with the car as he was going around him.”
Menelek Clarke, shot multiple times, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
“He’s stable. He just got a tube taken out, so he’s talking,” Sherylann Clarke said. “He said that he felt like he was going to die.”
Sherylann Clarke said her brother wasn’t armed and he remains in critical, but stable, condition.
The Florida Deparment of Law Enforcement is now investigating the shooting, as is standard.
