The niece of Hazel Fernandez says her aunt is in better spirits as she recovers from that crash, explaining her aunt was simply heading home when someone else’s careless actions changed Fernandez’s life forever.

ā€œIt’s crazy this happened to her because it can happen to anybody,ā€ said Katherine Perdomo. ā€œIt lives in my head and it’s unbearable. I can’t even imagine what she was going through.ā€

On Tuesday, her 57-year-old aunt was involved in a fiery crash in Hollywood, along Sheridan Street and North 66th Avenue.

Saturday 9 a.m. report:

Witnesses claim two people were speeding on motorcycles when one of them crashing into Fernandez.

ā€œThe motorcycle essentially t-boned her on the right side of her car and that’s why that part is affected,ā€ said Perdomo.

Perdomo said Fernandez pulled herself out of the vehicle and grabbed her purse so first responders could identify her.

ā€œShe had burns to her face, right arm, back and the right side of her body overall,ā€ she said.

Fernandez is now recovering from her injuries, said to have burns to 15 to 20% of her body.

ā€œThey’re constantly changing the bandages for her wounds,ā€ said Perdomo. ā€œUnfortunately given the servility of her injuries, I know this is going to be a lengthy process.ā€

As for the accident, the motorcyclist that crashed into Fernandez died and their passenger was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

ā€œSpeeding, in motorcycles, endangering other people’s lives, it’s beyond me, it’s infuriating and makes my blood boil,ā€ said Perdomo.
