Jail records show Jaden Malik Burke is facing one count each of tampering with a witness and one count of conspiracy to tamper with a witness in a third-degree felony proceeding.
Prosecutors allege Burke relayed a message last November from Corey Levon Lewis, 47, who is accused of shooting a man during an altercation in the early morning hours of Aug. 30, 2023.
According to police, the shooting occurred around 3 a.m. near the 1800 block of Fletcher Street.
A woman told officers she witnessed Lewis shoot her boyfriend in the shoulder. At the time of the shooting, police said Burke was inside the home but in another area and reported only hearing the gunshot.
Burke was later arrested on unrelated charges on Sept. 6, 2023, and while in custody, was housed at the North Broward Detention Center — the same facility as Lewis.
During a May 2024 deposition, a witness told Assistant State Attorney Charles Bynum that after Burke was released from jail in November 2023, he approached her and relayed an offer from Lewis.
According to the arrest warrant, Lewis promised to pay $1,000 in cash and provide two pounds of marijuana if she and another individual did not appear in court — which could lead to charges being dropped.
Investigators said jail phone recordings backed up the account. In one call, police said Burke allegedly told the woman, “Just don’t talk to police no more, don’t go to court, just don’t show up … and you’ll have it.”
When the woman said she still planned to testify, Burke said he was only passing along the message and didn’t want to be involved.
In another recorded conversation, Burke spoke with his aunt, referring to Lewis as “Blood,” according to an arrest report.
Burke explained that Lewis had already spent $30,000 on a lawyer and could only offer $1,000 to $2,000, the report stated.
That’s when police said his aunt replied, “He’s gonna have to do more than that … it’s gonna be about 5 to 10 bands,” which is a street term for thousands of dollars.
The witness later told authorities she remains “in fear for her safety” and her family’s, despite Lewis being incarcerated. She believes he has associates outside of jail who could still act on his behalf, according to the report.
Investigators said Lewis was arrested on Sept. 6, 2023, after officers with HPD’s Street Crimes Unit and narcotics detectives observed him entering a white Chevrolet Impala.
When Lewis parked near the 1600 block of Federal Highway, detectives said they took him into custody without incident. Inside the vehicle, police found 5.9 grams of fentanyl, 80 grams of cocaine, and 178 grams of cannabis.
As of Tuesday, Burke was being held without bond at the Joseph V. Conte Detention Facility in Broward.
Records show Lewis is facing charges of attempted murder, armed burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and multiple drug offenses.
He is being held without bond at the Broward Sheriff’s Office North Broward Bureau.
