Juan Vera, a convicted felon, was arrested on June 12 in Tampa after deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office spotted his vehicle parked in the area.

Authorities say Vera is wanted in connection with a June 4 shooting near Northeast First Avenue and Sixth Street that left one man dead and a woman injured.

Miami Police Department spokesman Officer Michael Vega said the shooting happened inside a homeless encampment.

James Blum, a friend of the victim, told Local 10 News the dispute was over a $1,000 debt.

“He was a really nice guy,” Blum said. “Outgoing, always generous. It’s just senseless.”

Authorities have not disclosed the ages and identities of both victims.

Jail records show Vera is facing one count each of first-degree murder and one count attempted murder.

As of Thursday, Vera is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
