Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz speaks on U.S. missile strikes in Iran

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Florida Democrats held their annual Leadership Blue Gala on Saturday night in Hollywood.

Many at the event learned about the missile strikes on Iran as the party was going on.

U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was there and Local 10 News had a chance to get her thoughts.

She said Israel’s initial strike against Iran provided a window of opportunity to protect our national interests by ensuring the U.S. adversary does not develop a nuclear weapon.

“My first concern is for our troops that are stationed in the Middle East and deeply concerned for retaliation,” she said. “What is critical right now is that hopefully this action brings Iran back to the table where we can engage in diplomacy. I support protecting the national security interests of the United States of America and what I certainly believe is that there should not be any further action unless the president comes to Congress and has us utilize our war powers that are part of our responsibility in the United States construction.”

She added that she believes the key right now is getting Iran back to the negotiating table so the situation doesn’t escalate beyond this point.
