Body camera footage released, family lawsuit pending following fatal Redlands police shooting

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Authorities have released the body camera footage stemming from a fatal police shooting that occurred in November of 2023 in the Redlands of Miami-Dade County.

The video shows officers with the then-Miami-Dade Police Department on scene after Osvaldo Cueli was shot and killed.

In one of the videos, an officer is heard reminding others that their body cameras were rolling.

It was part of evidence released by the State Attorney’s Office, including 911 calls, one from Cueli’s son asking for an ambulance.

Local 10 previously interviewed Cueli’s daughter, who took gut-wrenching video in the moments immediately after the shooting, with her father on the ground after being shot.

Police say they were responding to a call about a possible stolen vehicle, and that there was a confrontation.

Mario Fernandez and Jorge Sanchez, two detectives from the former MDPD’s Illegal Dumping Unit, shot and killed the 59-year-old.

Cueli’s son said just before the shooting, they had seen two trespassers on their property and that at the time, he says they didn’t know they were police.

He said his dad never fired a gun and that bullet holes left behind were from an officer firing at them from inside his unmarked unit.

But prosecutors say Cueli shot his gun at least three times, hitting one of the trucks.

A recent close out memo from the State Attorney’s Office said there was insufficient evidence to determine if the police shooting was justified.

Cueli’s family has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the county, and that case is pending.
