BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 4-year-old bulldog named Acorn is looking for a forever home after his former family surrendered him to the Humane Society of Broward County, saying they no longer had time for him.
Affectionate, playful and content with short strolls, Acorn has been described as the perfect dog for someone who prefers cozy nights on the couch to long walks in the park.
He may not be an ideal fit for light sleepers, though — he’s a heavy breather with a likely tendency to snore.
“He tires out pretty easily,” said HSBC’s Cherie Wachter on Local 10’s Adopt a Pet segment on Saturday. “He’ll go to the end of the driveway and be ready to come back in.”
Wachter said Acorn arrived at the shelter with bladder stones, a medical condition that required surgery.
He has since recovered but will need to remain on a prescription diet to help prevent the condition from recurring. That means sticking to specialized food and treats, but Wachter says that’s manageable with the right routine.
“He’s sweet, he’s cute, and he’s very cuddly,” she said. “He was great in the car, good with kids, and we think he’s even a little scared of cats.”
Unlike most bulldogs, Acorn still has his natural tail, a small but notable trait that adds to his charm. And despite the panting and excitement brought on by studio lights during his recent TV appearance, he’s generally mellow and affectionate.
Acorn is one of about 60 dogs from four major South Florida shelters participating in the Petco Love Mega Adoption Event at Tree Tops Park.
The event, held Saturday, offers potential adopters a chance to meet dozens of dogs from across the region.
“Basically, Tree Tops Park becomes another shelter for the day,” Wachter said. “If Acorn’s not the right fit for your home, there are plenty of other lovable pets waiting to meet you.”
HSBC currently has many animals available for adoption, including puppies and kittens. Staff encourage the public to visit regularly, as new pets arrive every day.
