Jail records show Yoel Majin Hernandez is facing charges of attempted felony murder with a firearm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Officers with the Opa-locka Police Department said they responded around 1:45 a.m. to a business near the 4100 block of Northwest 132nd Street after receiving a report of an armed man in the area.

According to an arrest report, the altercation began as an argument over an unpaid debt.

The victim told police that Hernandez threatened him, saying, “Oh, you’re not going to pay me back? Okay, watch what’s going to happen,” before briefly leaving the area, the report stated.

That’s when police say Hernandez returned with a case of beer, removed two bottles, and threw them at the victim.

The victim then threw a hammer back at Hernandez in self-defense, according to the report.

Shortly after, authorities said Hernandez retrieved a gun and fired a shot at the victim. The victim then ran into his office and called 911.

Within minutes, police said they located Hernandez at a nearby commercial garage.

They said a loaded Springfield XD .45-caliber pistol was found on a pool table inside the garage before taking Hernandez into custody.

Hernandez told police that he acted in self-defense, but investigators said that claim was contradicted by surveillance video and consistent witness statements at the scene.

Three witnesses corroborated the victim’s account, and surveillance video captured the confrontation, police said. One shell casing was recovered, and the gun was secured as evidence, the report stated.

As of Wednesday, Hernandez was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.”
