FHP: Driver opens fire after multi-vehicle crash on I-95 in North Miami

Shooter was taken to hospital; no other injuries reported, authorities say

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – A Fourth of July celebration turned terrifying for several drivers late Friday night after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in North Miami ended with gunfire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said five vehicles were involved in a crash just before midnight on the northbound side of Interstate 95 near Northwest 125th Street.

They said a white Jaguar SUV was among the vehicles involved.

Immediately after the crash, FHP officials said the driver of the Jaguar pulled out a gun and began firing from inside the vehicle.

Cellphone video from Only in Dade shows the moments that a driver pulled up to the scene moments after the crash turned into gunfire.

Emergency crews responded quickly, securing the area and clearing shattered glass and debris from the roadway.

Troopers said they arrested the suspected shooter without further incident.

The man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center with injuries related to the crash, authorities said.

Authorities said he will be transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center once medically cleared.

His age and identity weren’t immediately available.

Video from the scene showed a heavy law enforcement and emergency response presence on the highway overnight. Hours after the crash, cleanup crews and tow trucks remained on site.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash or the shooting, FHP officials confirmed.

They said the investigation remains ongoing.
