Cam Ward, Hurricanes swamp Gators in season opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Talk about making an opening statement.

The Miami Hurricanes went into the swamp and crushed the Florida Gators 41-17.

Quarterback Cam Ward had a remarkable debut for the Canes, throwing for 385 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Canes jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Ward to Cam McCormick.

After the two teams exchanged field goals, Mark Fletcher ran for a 10-yard touchdown in the 2nd quarter to put the Canes up 17-3.

Florida showed a little life in the 2nd quarter.

Montrelle Johnson Jr. had a 71-yard touchdown run to cut Miami’s lead to 17-10.

But before the half, Ward for Xavier Restrepo for a 24-yard touchdown pass to put Miami up 24-10.

It was the same story in the 2nd half.

After a second Fletcher rushing touchdown, Ward hit Jacolby George for a 23-yard touchdown to put Miami up 38-10.

Miami finished with more than 500 yards of total offense.
