SUNRISE, Fla. – Sam Bennett, center for the Florida Panthers and reigning Stanley Cup champion, is making headlines off the ice with a heartwarming initiative to support homeless pets in South Florida.
For every goal he scores this season, Bennett will sponsor the adoption fees for dogs and cats at the Humane Society of Broward County, aiming to give these animals a chance at a loving home.
“This season has gotten off to a great start,” Bennett said. “I’m excited to be able to give back to animals in need.”
In just the first two weeks of the new season, he has already netted seven goals, creating excitement both on and off the ice.
Bennett’s commitment to animal welfare stems from his own experiences as a pet owner.
After adopting a puppy named Billy, he and his fiancée, Zoe, were inspired to help more animals find loving homes.
The couple frequently visited the shelter before deciding to adopt.
“We came to the shelter multiple times, and when we saw the new puppies, we knew we had to act fast,” Bennett said.
In addition to their new puppy, Bennett and Zoe share their home with a six-year-old cat named Gracie, who was also rescued.
“It just started when I was a kid. Growing up, I always had cats and dogs; three different cats and two dogs. I’ve always loved having pets around,” Bennett said.
Gracie has now taken on the role of big sister to Billy, further solidifying the couple’s commitment to animal rescue.
Bennett’s love for animals extends beyond personal ownership; it’s a family affair.
Zoe has volunteered at the shelter, nurturing her own passion for helping pets in need.
“It started with my fiancée volunteering here at the shelter, and she really wanted to do something with pets, and I have always loved pets,” Bennett said.
The couple’s shared devotion has led them to become advocates for adoption, emphasizing the importance of finding homes for pets in need.
This initiative not only raises awareness about the plight of homeless animals but also highlights the emotional connections between pets and their owners.
Bennett aims to encourage fans to adopt rather than shop for pets.
“Along with sponsoring all the adoption fees, I think just getting that awareness out there that there’s a bunch of dogs and cats that need homes and adopting is the best route to go,” he said.
As Bennett continues to light up the scoreboard, he hopes this program evolves into a larger rescue operation.
Bennett says his goal is not just to score goals but to make a tangible difference in the lives of pets waiting for homes.
“So do we have a goal? How many goals are we in for this season?” asked Local 10′s Jacey Birch.
“I mean I don’t think there’s a number, definitely trying to beat last year. I had 20 last year, so there’s a lot of pressure now,” Bennett laughed.
This season, as fans rally behind the Panthers, Bennett’s initiative has created a buzz both within the organization and among supporters.
Bennett is committed to choosing pets that have been at the shelter the longest, ensuring that the neediest animals receive the help they deserve. As he racks up goals, each one represents a chance for another pet to find its forever home.
As the Florida Panthers continue their pursuit of success on the ice, Bennett’s efforts off the ice are making waves in the community.
He hopes his initiative will inspire others to consider adoption and help promote animal welfare. With every goal scored, he reinforces the message that saving lives is just as important as scoring points.
For those interested in supporting the cause, Bennett encourages everyone to consider adopting a furry friend from their local shelter.
