Copyright 2019 CNN(CNN) - Chantal is churning Wednesday in the North Atlantic -- at roughly the same latitude as Philadelphia -- but the tropical storm isn't expected to have any impact on land, the National Hurricane Center said. Conditions for tropical storms become more favorable during the roughly eight weeks around that date. It's due to remain a weak tropical storm through Friday, then make a loop in the North Atlantic over the weekend and fizzle out, forecasters predict. "The Atlantic went from July 15 - August 19 with 0 named storms - the first hurricane season to do so since 1982," he wrote, also noting that Chantal formed further north than any other tropical storm since the 1980s. Last year saw an above-average Atlantic hurricane season, with Hurricanes Florence and Michael slamming US coastlines with devastating effect.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km), mainly south of the center.

Time is an issue here, according to national storm experts. This low-pressure weather system has just 24 hours or so to ripen into a full-fledged tropical storm. Even if Chantal doesn't mature, the Southeast United States will see widespread rainfall and thunderstorms on Tuesday as the low-pressure system moves through the region, the National Weather Service predicts. The entire low-pressure system is expected to move northwest about 15 mph Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center. When first detected on Sunday afternoon, the system had just a 20% chance of maturing into a tropical storm.
