Attorneys for the FHSAA argued the ban was warranted, but during the game, Johnson received support from both sides of the field. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University has its head football coach. Harris has deep ties in South Florida, having recently served as head coach at Booker T. Washington Senior High School in Miami. "I'm so excited about being the new football coach at Florida Memorial University," Harris said. Harris has an overall record of 114-21 and three state championships in nine seasons as a high school coach. MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A South Florida high school student has been banned from playing sports after two incidents on the lacrosse field. "That's my future, my college future, for playing sports if I want to play sports," Luther Johnson V. said. The decision to suspend him from playing was upheld by the state's high school athletic board last month. "Luther was playing against Marjory Stoneman Douglas (High School). There, he was the only black kid in the whole game," Williams said.

Officiating high school sports has always been a thankless job, when often, the only time a referee gets noticed is when he or she makes a glaring mistake. But the job has become so thankless, that people are pulling out of officiating altogether, which is bad news for high school sports. State high school athletic associations around the country have experienced a decline over the years in registered officials. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association has seen a 15 percent drop in registered officials, while the Illinois High School Association has seen a 14 percent decline, Boone said. “Without contest officials, games cannot be played and student-athletes miss out on part of their high school experience,” Boone said.

MIAMI – South Florida will be well represented in the Florida state championship games next weekend. Miami Central and Norland were also winners in state semifinal games. Quarterback Cam Hudge led the Patriots to a pair of second half touchdowns in their victory over Columbus. Norland beat Palmetto 35-27 as their defense stopped the Tigers in the final seconds of their 5-a state semifinal. Norland will play Wakulla in the state championship game.
