Evacuation orders for many of the 5,000 residents of Calistoga were reduced Friday to warnings, although trees and some homes on the town borders were burning. Altogether, wildfires have killed 31 people and destroyed 8,200 structures in California this year. Numerous studies have linked bigger wildfires in the U.S. to climate change from the burning of coal, oil and gas. Scientists say climate change has made California much drier, meaning trees and other plants are more flammable.

Joined by his wife and two of his four children, Freddy Ramirez was introduced Wednesday morning as the incoming director of the Miami-Dade Police Department. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez made the announcement at police headquarters in Doral. The move comes after outgoing Director Juan Perez announced he will retire after nearly 30 years of service. Gimenez thanked Perez, who began his career with the Miami-Dade Police Department in 1990, for his service and praised the department's accomplishments under Perez's watch.

Miami-Dade police Detective Argemis Colome said officers were called to the home after receiving several 911 calls about shots being fired. Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez said on Twitter that he was thankful the officers were not seriously injured. Police said Juan Perez was last seen driving a red 2016 Honda CRV with Florida tag ITDM29 when he left his home at about 8 a.m. Friday. Perez never arrived home and has not made contact with any friends or family members, police said. Perez is described by police as about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds and having short gray hair and brown eyes. Police said he was last seen wearing a white button-down shirt with brown stripes and long khaki pants.
