The Philadelphia district attorney who became a campaign trail punching bag for Republicans amid rising crime in U.S. cities during the coronavirus pandemic is running for reelection on the back end of a withering effort to oust progressive district attorneys nationwide.

A lawyer for a suspended Florida prosecutor told the state Supreme Court that Gov. Ron DeSantis exceeded his authority when he removed a Democratic state attorney from her elected office.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday that he has suspended Orange-Osceola State Attorney Monique Worrell, effective immediately, for “neglect of duty and incompetence.”

The families of two of the three victims in a string of Pine Hills shootings last week took time Thursday to talk about their loved ones publicly for the first time, but also to criticize Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Rick Scott for attacking Orange-Osceola counties’ attorney general in a “coordinated effort to paint a false narrative.”
