OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – A man was struck and killed by an SUV early Friday while crossing a street in Opa-locka, prompting a police investigation and major road closure.
Around 5:30 a.m., a loud boom startled neighbors near the intersection of Northwest 27th Avenue and Ali Baba Avenue, leading many to rush outside.
According to Opa-locka police, the man was attempting to cross the street when he was hit by a black SUV. The impact shattered the vehicle’s windshield.
The man, who was not in a designated crosswalk, was rushed to the hospital but later died, authorities said.
His sandals were left untouched in the roadway, and evidence markers filled the street as the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office homicide unit took over the investigation.
Evidence markers were seen on the pavement, along with what appear to be the man’s shoes.
Drone footage showed the intersection blocked off as detectives gathered evidence.
Officers were seen photographing the scene and placing evidence markers along the roadway, which was still closed hours after the crash.
9 a.m. report:
A witness told Local 10 News this is not the first time someone has been hit while crossing in that area.
“Mostly people cross late at night or early in the morning. There is no lights between 151st and it’s pretty hard to see what’s coming. A lot of the times cars come with no lights on, and they come fast.” said Opa-locka resident Tony Ocean. “It’s happened before and I think I know the person who died. I’m almost sure of it.”
“I hope their body rests in peace right now,” he added.
Police confirmed the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. They also emphasized that the crash is not being investigated as a hit-and-run.
Northwest 27th Avenue was temporarily shut down in both directions between Ali Baba Avenue and Northwest 147th Street.
Authorities have not disclosed the age and identity of the victim.
No other details about the crash were immediately released.
