PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Flood-prone areas in South Florida face risks this weekend and next week with showers, thunderstorms, and the impact of a major hurricane. A flood watch will be in effect from Sunday morning to Thursday and the forecast is 6 to 10 inches of rainfall.
On Saturday, The National Hurricane Center tracked Hurricane Kirk over the central subtropical Atlantic, Hurricane Leslie over the eastern tropical Atlantic, and Tropical Storm Milton in the Gulf of Mexico. Kirk and Leslie were not a threat to South Florida. Milton is set to strengthen into a major hurricane, land on Florida’s western coast, and cross the state.
HURRICANE SPECIALIST: Forecast ratchet up, putting Florida peninsula on alert for possible hurricane threat
The Local 10 News Weather Authority meteorologists expect the hurricanes to stay away from Florida but warned the tropical depression is set to strengthen into a tropical storm, as it continues to move slowly eastward over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
By early next week, the system is forecast to move faster eastward or northeastward where additional strengthening into Hurricane Miltion is likely. The Florida Peninsula and the northwestern Bahamas should monitor it.
Officials asked residents to prepare for the inevitable rain by clearing drains and using sandbags.
