HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Residents of the Seville Mobile Home community in Hallandale Beach are bracing for more potential flooding as Hurricane Milton approaches, with many still reeling from past storms that submerged the neighborhood.
Rolando Alarcón pointed to the mark on his wall, indicating how high the water reached inside his home.
The Seville mobile home community, located off Federal Highway and Seventh Street, was flooded for days during a series of relentless summer storms. Residents, like Ada Giménez, recall the devastation.
“It reached halfway up the block,” said Giménez.
Alarcón said the floodwaters lingered for four or five days.
With Hurricane Milton now threatening more torrential downpours, concerns in the community are growing.
Others, like Nicole, a Broward County resident, are trying to find humor in the situation.
“I might as well get a boat,” she said.
Steve Bogusky is relying on faith. “Just pray, pray, that’s all we can do,” he said.
Hallandale Beach Vice Mayor Anabelle Lima-Taub says the city has been working to address long-standing drainage issues in mobile home communities, but progress has been slow.
“There’s no drainage, and there are probably other issues as well,” she said.
With the emergency declaration ahead of the storm, crews have been able to enter private properties to clear catch basins and inlets to help mitigate flooding risks.
“We just hope for the best,” Bogusky said.
